Rural Studio

  • Mood: Exhilarated
I just got back from my spring break. I went down to Alabama with several of the girls from my architecture studio. Auburn University in Alabama has an architecture department within which one program is this Rural Studio where students design and build structures for the towns of below poverty line areas. Some of the structures we visited were a fire station, 20 k houses, and a few pavilions and parks. We also volunteered for a few days and planted approximately thirty trees at one of the parks they were working on.

I brought my camera with me so I should hopefully have some pretty awesome pictures to put up.

On a side note, probably my favorite night of the week was the night that the Auburn students threw a party where everyone from both schools raged on the dance floor. It was such an experience to see artists from very different areas rock out with what moves them in such a great form of expression.

This night alone, but also the entire trip has made me so high on life right now its incredible.

This is not a giant project. I have a client, Mrs Paddock, who is planning a major expansion of their home, as in a two story addition and a total change of use of the first floor plan. This is not a career maker, but it would involve design and structure, and I thought you with your fresh ideas may find it interesting.

She has gone to local architect and interior designers, and when she asked for help, they said "What do you want to do with this space? She said "I told you what I want, I thought you would tell me how to do it." She said she is not going to pay someone 6-8% of her project just to regurgitate her ideas.

What she is looking for is an ergonomic design that would maximize the use of her first floor, the second floor is just going to be a bedroom expansion and an enormous bathroom. i have a contractor going to the site to approximate floor areas and check the structure.

Avery, this may be a chapter in you portfolio, or nothing at all, but I told you I was impressed with your work and would try to help. I wasn't kidding.
you are welcome for the add, I stumbled across you from another site and thought I would check out your da. I think you are semi local, I am in the Ashland, ky area.
